Saint-Paul vault or Notre-Dame of the Penny in Lacenas
The
vault dominates the castle of the Penny and the valley of Morgon. Built
about the year 1100, it is a good example of the first Romanesque art.
The
gilded stone frontage presents the traces of two large arcs plug and a
door in semicircular arch of Romance style clunisien of XVème century,
framed by sober pilasters and posts. The small projecting blind arcades
and the capitals of the two pillars reveal a Byzantine and Venetian
influence.
The nave is framed, and the bell-tower barlong dominates an arched intermediate span. A modest apse in bottom of furnace is lit by a narrow window. The interior wall of the chorus was entirely covered with Gothic frescos with XIIème and XIVème centuries which constitute the most important whole of the Beaujolais wine.
The vault is open all first Saturday of the month.
