The mysterious inscription in Saint-Philibert

On one of the arcades, known as “arcade of Gerlannus”, is reproduced a mysterious text engraved in the stone which could not be deciphered to date; that thus made since approximately thousand years. Let us note first of all that it is not a question there of a simple graffiti. The letters, in capital letters Roman, formed well, are the work of a sculptor of trade. Moreover, this way of reversing the S, of binding letters between them in a common jamb - both NR, the second NR and the V of Gerlannus (V Latin is read U) -... [Lire la suite]

The Saint-Valérien church of Tournus

Regarded as a vault of the abbey intended to honour Holy Valérien, primitive owner of Tournus martyrized in IIème century, it was undoubtedly one of the first parish churches of Tournus. There remains today only the nave, arched in broken cradle. To notice: the superb gate, with its pilasters grooved with the antique and the effects of polychromy of the arc. Near the Abbey, this church belonged to another monastery, former to that of the monks of Saint-Philibert (those came from Noirmoutier after a long and animated... [Lire la suite]

The column of the zodiac

The museum of the column of the zodiac presents the most singular part of the inheritance of the abbey, famous the Romance “calendar”. Also known under the name of pillar, of octagone, or column of the zodiac, which translates the perplexity of the specialists correctly about it, this vestige is a strong octagonal pillar of 840kg, a 1,80 m height, which is obviously truncated half.A face on two is carved: the first face of the column represents work of the months, the second, the signs of the zodiac, the third and the...
