The Saint-Philibert abbey of Tournus

  Tournus is located at the edge of the Saone on a terrace easy to defend and with the shelter of the risings. Located on great voices of communication, Tournus was already a Roman castrum. In 175, the Romans established a camp strengthened on the site. It is used as relay for the legions and the mails of the Empire. Between 177 and 179, Valérien évangélise in Tournus. The church St Philibert de Tournus

It is one of the largest Romance monuments of France. It was built mainly in XIème century. It is made up of a whole of sanctuaries distributed on three levels: the crypt, the large church on one level, nave and chorus, the entered before-nave forming, and a higher church. The crypt of Saint-Philibert of Tournus

dedicated to St Valérien, martyrized in Tournus in IIème century, with half-buried because of the slope of the ground, it serves as sitted with the bedside of the church. One will notice the characteristics of voûtement, realized in a kind of concrete coarse and left gross dismantling, heritage of the techniques of vault préromane. Mosaics of the Saint-Philibert church

Conventual buildings of Saint Philibert

Vault the Michaelmas de Saint-Philibert

At the top of the narthex the vault Saint Michel is located, which also comprises three vessels of three spans. The mysterious inscription in Saint-Philibert

On one of the arcades, known as “arcade of Gerlannus”, is reproduced a mysterious text engraved in the stone which could not be deciphered to date; that thus made since approximately thousand years. Let us note first of all that it is not a question there of a simple graffiti. The letters, in capital letters Roman, formed well, are the work of a sculptor of trade. The cloister of Saint-Philibert

The cloister is leaned at the southern side of the nave. It has only two galleries in north and the east. The northern gallery opens on the garden by curved arcades which rest on solid masses square pillars, framed by squat columns, with the vegetable and geometrical capitals. This gallery is covered with a groined vault received by imbedded columns. The Eastern gallery is covered by a frame.
