Yzeure would come from Gallic Iciodorum. Two possible translations: Itio would be a name of anybody (Itis) and dorum means small village: the town of Itius. Or: Icio - itio - iccio is the Gallic adjective related to water and Dorum indicates the door, in the direction of the passage. As we say, “running water”, the Gallic ones said “busy water”.

I prefer the second explanation… As it is known, often, a high-place is posed on a crossing of subsoil water currents.

A monastery was built in IXth century. The Saint-Pierre church was attached to the abbey of bénédictines of Saint-Menoux to XIIth century and guard the trace of several construction campaigns.

Built partly at the roman time , it is remarkable by the ornamentation of its frontage of XIIth century and by its crypt of IXth and Xth century.

The gate of Burgundian influence present of the capitals decorated with monsters, the reasons antiquisants and of let us modillons with fantastic decorations.

In the nave and the sides, 32 capitals of XIIth century are carved the rinceaux one and plants.

Furniture is also exceptional like the churchwarden's pews of the corporations, the polychrome statue of the Virgin to the child whose draped a dating of XIVth century and the pulpit out of carved wooden of 1623 allows.

The chorus was rebuilt in XIIIth century.

The blind, long nave of four spans and the sides are an example of Burgundian Romance construction. It dates from XIIth century.

The transept is older than the nave. Its prospect more severe, is decorated seulemnt with a cord for tickets. It probably dates from XIth century.

The capitals are not without analogy with those of Souvigny and Saint-Menoux.

In the West, the principal door with naked tympanum offers a definitely Burgundian ornamentation (capitals decorated with faced birds with common head).

In the South-western vault, many pieces of sculpture of the Burgundian school of XVth century, in particular Sainte Agnes and Saint Jean-baptiste.

The crypt

The crypt, which extends under the transept, is a rectangular room arched in quadrant connected by three Roman arches to a construction a little less old finished in hemicycle to the east and divided into three small naves separated by square pillars carrying from the groined vaults.

It is dated from IXth or Xth century. It is decorated by paintings with the ceiling, between each pillar.
