Guebwiller
Church Saint-Leger (XIIème - XIIIème S.), Rhenish late Romance style. It is oldest of the three churches of Guebwiller.
Built
since 1182 thanks to the science and to the esthetism of the abbots of
Murbach with which quoted it being born from Guebwiller owes its
fortifications. Very out of pink sandstone the building justifying the
concept of a late Romance style is constituted of two square towers in
the west which rest on porches, while a third octagonal tower, is
arranged with transept crossing.
The
interior is specific to the Romance churches taking into consideration
its alternation pillars strong pillars weak. The chorus, decorated with
stalls out of wooden with biblical medallions, dates from XIVème
century. Seen outside the porch of entry is with three arcades whereas
the tympanum represents Christ surrounded of the Virgin and Saint-Leger.
This
enigmatic saint could refer to one figures protagonists of the Golden
Legend. The history proceeds “in the Year of Lord 680, of the time of
Constantin IV”. With died of king Clotaire, Saint-Leger, responsible
for the businesses of the kingdom, made reach Childéric the throne,
which strongly displeased in Ebroïn which dedicated to the saint an
eternal hatred.
Inside the church, the pillars have a number of éclatoirs impressive… Never considering! The currents are powerful there.
