Standing stones of Stenness

There is enough to remain one moment around the stones to be completely envoûté by the magic which they still release. A promise of flight…


Stenness__Orcades_024The circle is seen by far. The three stones which remain upright, remainder of a whole of 12, measure 4m 80 with 5m 70. Dating in C14 on the organic remainders found made on the spot go up at at least 5.100 years the monument, which does of it already one of oldest of the United Kingdom. Like Brodgar, the circle in the beginning was surrounded by a 6 meters broad ditch for 2 meters 40 of deep. During the last excavations, the ditch filled of water. Stenness__Orcades_067Its diameter is approximately 44 meters. (it would seem that at the beginning, it was a éllipse). The roadway being used as entry faces the old village of Barnhouse. The “temple of the moon”, close to the “temple of the sun” and that “of stars” transports us far in time… But are this so far, and what time?

To finish, everyone returns to the house to light fires.
